What does the “Billing hard limit reached” error mean?

In the majority of cases, the “Billing hard limit reached” error means that the account doesn’t have enough funds to process site data, and more money needs to be added to proceed.

Since OpenAI operates on a prepaid credit basis, you need to have a high enough balance available on the account to process the site data.

To add more money to your account, please log into the OpenAI Platform site and go to the Account Settings area.

Inside the Account Settings, please navigate to the “Billing” area.

The Billing area shows how much money (credit) is on the account, and it allows you to add more by clicking on the “Add to credit balance” button.

Clicking on the “Add to credit balance” button will open a popup to allow you to put more money on the account.

Since we’ve seen the “Billing hard limit reached” error, it’s a good idea to put a moderate amount of money on the account. Usually, $10 will do it because charges are very rarely bigger than that.

After confirming the charge and adding the money, the page will reload and show us the new balance total.

Due to delays in the system, it may take up to 30 minutes for the API to fully catch up with the new account balance and you’re able to process data.
